“I’m so shocked,” Alvi said. “It’s really something that is really significant, and I am really proud of it.”
Alvi, a Village School student, is also a fashion designer, who has presented at school-wide fashion shows in the past with her personal designs from her line “Cleo.” Village School is a private school in West Houston.
Next week, Alvi heads to Paris with Nguyen, a designer whose work she said she admires. It wouldn’t be the first time she’s accompanied him to shows, she said, adding that she’s been working with him doing “anything you could possibly do” as a designer from fashion shows to working with runway models.

Alvi’s own design line, Cleo, started when she wanted to put paint to fabric and as a launchpad to create a website where other people can design their own clothes, she said.
Several of her pieces have become popular statements with her friends, she said.
