The article, by Margot Dougherty, centres on the Burren region, describing its history, the landscape, flora and fauna and Neolithic monuments, ruins and shrines, describing the region as “Hauntingly beautiful”. The author recommends local attractions such as the Burren Perfumery, as well as organised tours such as Heart of the Burren Walks. The author also recommends places to stay in the region, including Gregans Castle, situated just outside Ballyvaughan. Gregans Castle has also been frequented by author J.R.R Tolkien, who is said to have been inspired by the Burren region himself when writing Lord of the Rings.
Visitors from North America to the island of Ireland amounted to 2.38 million in 2018, with growth of 9.1% in the first half of 2019, according to Tourism Ireland. Growth is expected to continue, helped, in part, by the introduction of several new flights between the USA and Ireland, including a new flight between Minneapolis – St. Paul and Dublin, which launched in July 2019
According to data compiled by Tourism Ireland, visitors to Ireland from the USA are some of the most likely to explore Ireland by car, and not restrict themselves to cities. This opens up the opportunities for accommodation providers in more rural areas, to attract more overseas tourism, particularly from the USA.
