Caribbean: we’ll be open by Christmas

Just weeks after hurricanes Irma and Maria wreaked havoc across the northeastern Caribbean, the most badly affected islands are bouncing back faster than anticipated. Despite predictions that it could take them years to recover, some islands say they expect to be open to holidaymakers in time for Christmas.

The hardest-hit island, Dominica, has no prospect of being ready for conventional visits so soon — but instead has announced plans for an imaginative “voluntourism” scheme, inviting those with useful skills to come and combine a holiday with the relief effort.
