Fox Business host compares Denmark to Venezuela, gets slammed as ‘fake news’

Denmark may be one of the happiest places on Earth, but Danes weren’t exactly smiling when Fox Business Network host and MarketWatch alum Trish Regan last weekend unleashed a diatribe comparing the Scandinavian country to Venezuela.

“There’s something rotten in Denmark,” Regan began, before launching into an anti-socialism rant about taxes, unemployment and cupcakes.

Regan’s segment was met with responses from multiple Danish government officials, like this tweet from the finance minister:

Jensen would later add to his rebuttal.

Denmark ranks 12 in economic freedom, Venezuela ranks 179. It’s simply egregious,” he told the New York Times in an interview. “It made me angry to see such an erroneous image of Denmark. Trish can think whatever she wants about Denmark, but on a factual basis.”

And on Wednesday, Social Democrat and Member of Parliament Dan Jørgensen offered up a point-by-point video rebuttal and, borrowing a clip from “your beloved president,” concluded with “you are fake news.”

Regan addressed the backlash on Wednesday.

“I was never implying that conditions in Denmark were similar in any way to the current tragedy on the ground there in Venezuela,” she said, explaining that the whole point of her segment was to show that “socialism is not the way.”

This isn’t the first time one of those “happy” European nations has taken exception with right-wing talking points from the United States. After Trump’s inauguration speech trumpeted “America first,” satirical news show “Zondag Met Lubach” implored him to put “the Netherlands second,” mock-beseeching the president to visit Holland in the kind of language he’d understand.
