Travel + Leisure just named Snowflake, located at 1148 W. Main St. in Riverhead, the best ice cream in New York State. The shop got the nod as part of a roundup done by Travel + Leisure based on Yelp reviews.
“Nothing much has changed since Herb and Joan Kunitz introduced their ice cream parlor to Riverhead in 1953,” the post said. “The neon blue building still stands, with an ice cream cone proudly hanging off the roof. Wonderfully retro, the shop serves hard ice cream created by the Kunitzes, along with pillows of soft serve.”
Herb and Joan Kunitz started business in 1953 and sold it to Feldschuh and his wife Carolyn in 1988, he said. “We still use their basic recipes. I always loved cherry pistachio ice cream; as soon as we acquired Snowflake, I added dark cherries to our pistachio. My wife is a chocoholic, her favorite is Peconic Swamp Thing — chocolate with fudge, brownies, and a raspberry swirl. Carolyn developed our homemade fudge recipe,” he said.
This week, for example, in honor of this weekend’s Polish Festival, he’ll whip up an ice cream flavored with Jezynowka, a Polish blackberry brandy.
“Also this week, the last of the local blueberries, for a sundae topping, and local peaches for topping will continue probably ’till pumpkin ice cream starts,” he said.
Recently, other customer favorites have included muskmelon and watermelon sorbets, made with local fruit, and a cannoli flavor.
