THE TRAVEL DIARIES: ‘I spent two nights “glamping” at a luxury safari lodge in South Africa.’

When I was first invited to go on safari in South Africa, I have to admit, I was a little… worried.

In my mind, I imagined spending hours on end in the searing heat, trawling through the bush in an Indiana Jones-esque outfit.

To my ignorant mind, going on safari was essentially the definition of ‘roughing it’. A standard camping trip… with the added threat of huge, wild animals.

The reality, however, was very different.

From the moment I stepped on a single propeller plane at Johannesburg Airport to head to Madikwe Game Reserve, it was clear that this was not going to be any ordinary holiday.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to go on a safari, look no further. I (very eagerly) took one for the team and spent two glorious nights at Jaci’s Lodges to take a glimpse into what it’s really like to go “glamping” at a luxury safari lodge in the South African wilderness.

Here’s what I discovered:

What is a typical day like while staying at a safari lodge?

The days began early at Jaci’s Lodges.

Before the sun had even risen, we were given an early wake-up call from one of the friendly guides… or in my case, I woke up to the (slightly frightening) sounds of a monkey playing in my suite’s outdoor shower.

Every day was a unique experience. The morning after my unexpected wake-up call from a monkey, I woke up to the sounds of a herd of elephants just metres outside my room.

Yep, it’s pretty… surreal.
