Times letters: ‘Canned hunting’ and trophy hunting safaris

Sir, Your leading article “Can Hunting” (Jul 1) conflates two distinct activities: canned hunting within small fenced areas, and trophy hunting of wild, free-roaming lions. Canned hunting, as you point out, has no demonstrable conservation value and has been decried by a wide range of groups, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the global authority on conservation.

However, responsible trophy hunting of wild, free-ranging animals is a completely different activity, one that is recognised by many reputable conservation organisations, including the IUCN, as being an important part of the conservation toolbox. Sustainable hunting provides a sorely needed economic incentive for countries and landowners to maintain wildlife and its habitat, and can (and does) help to secure and even bolster threatened wildlife populations.…
