Tourism and travel supported 1.1M jobs in 2018

Tourism and travel contributed 8.8 percent to the economy in 2018 and supported 1.1 million jobs in Kenya.

This is according to the latest research by the World Travel and Tourism Council which says international tourists spent about Ksh 157 billion in Kenya last year.

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Naji Balala says the government is focusing on product development, beach strategy, infrastructure, and marketing to grow tourism numbers.

The government is banking on the implementation of the new tourism strategy to grow tourism numbers.

The strategy focuses on product development and diversification, a new beach strategy, infrastructure and marketing to grow and sustain tourism numbers going forward.

Several weeks ago, tourism players meet in Diani to chat the way as far as the beach product is concerned.

Balala says he has convened another meeting this weekend to come up with a strategy on the safari product that is distinct.

According to the latest research by the World Travel and Tourism Council, international tourists spent over 157 billion shillings in Kenya last year, with the largest inbound international markets being the US, UK, India, China, and Germany.

The research by the World Travel and Tourism Council found that in 2018, Travel and Tourism contributed 790 billion shillings, representing 8.8 percent to the Kenyan economy and 1.1 million jobs.
