— Wegmans is testing a new app in Rochester that allows customers to scan and bag their groceries as they shop.
The company tested the system with employees and is now rolling it out to shoppers at its East Avenue store in Rochester.
If the app is successful with customers, Wegmans said it will introduce the system in additional stores.
The new Wegmans SCAN app is available for download from the App Store and Google Play.
To use it, customers must be connected to the East Avenue store’s Wi-Fi and link the app to their Shoppers Club account.
Customers then scan their items using a mobile device and bag them as they shop.
Digital coupons and Shoppers Club discounts get applied automatically.
Customers can also enter item codes manually using the app.
Shoppers stop at a self-checkout register to pay on their way out, Wegmans said.
Wegmans has had a busy few weeks.
Earlier this week, the company announced plans to launch meal delivery service at dozens of new stores in the coming months. And in April, the chain said it would eliminate plastic bags from its New York stores this year, ahead of a statewide ban on the bags that will take effect in 2020.

The company started testing the service in the Rochester area last year.
The company opened a new store in Virginia Beach in April and just announced that its store in Brooklyn will open in October.
Wegmans, based in Rochester, has 99 stores in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
